Makapu'u Lighthouse

Whale watching season is coming to an end soon so the kids and I decided to go check them out near Makapu'u Point a couple of weeks ago.  Tristan's friend, Nale, came with us.  At first I thought we would just stop at the look outs off the side of the road but then we decided to just head up the Makapu'u Lighthouse trail and see how far we could get.  Haha!  It was quite the adventure going up the trail with 2 four year olds and 1 two year old, but we made it all the way to the top!  And we saw a TON of whales!

It's a 2 mile hike round-trip and stroller friendly, which doesn't sound bad at all.  But when your two year old decides half way up that she doesn't want to be in the stroller any more, and only wants to be held, AND the bigger four year old wants to ride in the stroller most of the time, then it becomes a little more challenging.  :)  I had the double stroller and at one point I had all three in the stroller!  Betsy threw a few tantrums, but we made it and it was awesome.

I think I need to wait until B is a little older before I hike with the kids by myself again!

Just chatting away.  Can you believe they are only 2 months apart?:

Tristan was stoked on seeing the lighthouse this close:

It was super windy when we got to the top!  The boys were throwing the leaves they collected into the air and loved watching them fly.

A view of Sea Life Park, where Tristan spent his birthday this year.

When I asked them to smile for the camera, they both leaned in opposite directions and tilted their heads.  I love these two so much.  I'm glad everyone had a good time!

Tristan's broken arm

On March 3rd, we started our Sunday morning like any other morning.  I remember it was freezing that morning, so after I made the kids breakfast I jumped back into bed to try and get warm under the covers.  I started getting the usual "I'm flying to California in two days!" anxiety.  I always freak myself out because it's a freaky thing to do and I have a million things on my mind, like things I need to get done before we leave or things I need to remember to pack.

As I was lying in bed, I sneezed.  Then I felt it coming!  I tweaked my neck!!  NO!  This can't be happening.  I was in so much pain and I couldn't move.  I couldn't even get out of bed because that would involve using my neck muscles to lift my head.  Christian had to help me up.  So this was a bad, bad thing to do right before my trip.  I couldn't fly alone with the kids while I was in that much pain.  How embarrassing!  I sneezed and I tweaked my neck.  Ridiculous.

We immediately contacted our friend who does acupuncture to see if he would be able to treat me that night so I could try and heal faster for the flight.  He agreed to come up to our house that night.

Moving on to our next tragedy.  I stayed home from church because I was dying a little from the pain.  Christian braved both kids at church.  That afternoon/evening the kids were going stir crazy in the house, so Christian took them down to the park to get some wiggles out.  It was getting close to 6:00 and the sun was going down.  Christian called me and said that Tristan had just broken his arm from jumping off the slide, and he was going to take him to the hospital.  He was with our friends, the Lindquists, and they were going to drop Betsy with me while Bruce helped hold Tristan in the front seat.  When they came to drop B, it was SO sad to see Tristan in so much pain.  I wish I wasn't 'out-of-order' so I could be the one holding him and comforting him.

Christian later described what happened at the park:  He was already having a rough time with a trantruming Betsy who insisted on climbing on the jungle jim where she could get trampled  by the many older kids running around everywhere. So they where watching her more closely than Tristan; he is great at climbing and knows how to be careful- usually...So Christian was talking to the Lindquists, a couple from church, and hears Tristan screaming.  He looked over and could see Tristan on the ground at the bottom of the slide.  He ran over, asking, "What happened? Where does it hurt?" and could tell it was a different, serious pain by Tristan's face. He looked really scared and was screaming and crying so hard. As Christian lifted him up, Tristan cried "Dad, my arm isn't working! It won't move!" and it was kind of just limp and flopping around.  He had a jacket on, so Christian felt down his arm and could feel a bend in his arm and knew it was broken.  He handed Tristan to Bruce, who said they'd help, and grabbed Betsy and ran to the car.

I lost contact with Christian at the hospital because his battery died.  I was dying to know what was going on!  After I fed B and put her down for the night, I called our dear friends, the Thomsons, to have Zach take me to the hospital while Alyse stayed at the house with Betsy while she slept.

When I arrived at the hospital, they walked me to his bed and said to wait there while they were running more X-rays on Tristan.  While I was waiting I saw this laying on the chair...

My jaw dropped!  I couldn't believe how bad the break was.  I was so sad for Tristan.  I waited for about 20 minutes and I was thinking that Tristan would be crying and in pain when they brought him back.  When I saw him being wheeled back to his bed he was the happiest little boy, all drugged up and pain free.  That was nice to see.  :)  We were all so happy to see each other!  T was feeling so good from the meds he even started joking around with the nurses.

I was able to talk to his doctor to find out what was going on.  It's funny because the doctor kept saying that Tristan would be fine to fly out in two days.  Ha!  With my neck and his arm, I was more than happy to cancel my trip.  With a doctors note, we were fully reimbursed for the cancellation fee.  We just need to postpone the trip for a couple of months.  So basically, the ER doctor said that our Orthopedic Dr. would be able to tell us more after we met with him, whether he needed surgery or not.

We met with Dr. Garber, the Orthopedic Surgeon a couple days later.  (Until then, nights were super hard!  Tristan had the hardest time sleeping.  He was so uncomfortable).  Dr. Garber gave us the option to cast it as is, or to knock him out and adjust the bones, then cast it.  He said that if we casted it as is, Tristan should be able to heal on his own, but he would probably have a really crooked arm for 3-4 years.  Ah!  We opted to get the arm adjusted before it was casted.

That Friday, we were scheduled for a 7:00 a.m. surgery, at the Pali Momi Hospital out in Aiea, 40 minutes away.  We were told to be there 2 hours early to register and get Tristan prepped.  Which means we had to leave our house at 4:15 a.m.  Craziness!  Our friend, Alyse, came up to the house at 4:00 a.m. to stay with Betsy girl.  What would we do without all of our amazing friends?

Tristan was really really excited for his surgery day because of the hard cast, and he was excited to see if it would protect him from his nerf gun bullets.  Funny kid.  Surgery was fast (well, it was a pretend surgery because they didn't end up opening him up.  They made the adjustment by pulling on fingers and wiggling his arm around).  T was in a lot of pain after the surgery but as soon as we got home, he was as chipper as can be.

Fast forward 3 1/2 weeks.  We noticed that his ring finger on his broken arm side was bent stiff.  It would not straighten at all.  We asked Dr. Garber about it at his follow up appointment and he said that was unusual, something he's never seen before.  He assumed that his flexor tendon grew in to his cartilage somehow, and that we may need another surgery to fix it.  Sad!  We were disappointed to hear this.  After he got 2 opinions from hand surgeons, he said that there is a chance that it can heal on its own since he's so young.  Garber is going to monitor it for the next month, and then we will start seeing the hand specialist for either hand therapy or another surgery.  Bummer.  But the cast comes off in 2 weeks!  We can't wait to go swimming again!

Aside from the pains he felt in the beginning, I think that Tristan has loved this whole experience.  He has been enjoying all the attention he's been getting from everyone, and he said that he feels more like a super hero with his hard cast on.  I know that everything will pass soon and his arm and hand will heal just fine.  Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers!

P.S. After two acupuncture treatments, my neck healed about 4 days later.  So lame.  I'm never sneezing again!

Tristan turned 4!

Our sweet Tristan turned 4 on February 26th.  I sat down with him to ask him some very important questions so we could remember all of his favorite things at age 4.  I did not help him with any of these, they were first words to come out of his mouth when I asked the questions.

His actual birthday fell on a preschool day, which was at our house.  Below, his preschool class eats cupcakes together.  I love this little group.

His friend, Talia stayed and played that afternoon.

That evening we ate pizza, his favorite, and had some yellow cake with buttercream frosting.  Below, I sang a very intense Happy Birthday song.

I truly believe that age four is the magic year!  We made it!  The tantrums are far and few.  Our communication is 100% better.  I love having conversations with Tristan.  So many great things are going on in his mind.  He loves to help with cleaning, carrying groceries, cooking, etc.  He is one smart boy, and such a sweetheart.  Happy Birthday Tristan!

Sea Life Park

Our little man turned four on the 26th!  We decided take him to Sea Life Park this year and forgo the stress of planning a birthday party.  We invited a few families and wanted to surprise Tristan so we didn't tell him a thing.  It turned out that there were a couple more birthdays that were going to be celebrated in our friend circle, so we had a great turn out!  Plus, it was the last Saturday of a great deal that was going on, only $10 a person!  Tristan thought that everyone was there for him and he felt so special.  :)

Quite a view behind our dolphin show.  It was a beautiful day!

Betsy with her friend, Abigail.

I think that the tank show was the highlight of Tristan's day.  They played songs (that he knew) on the speaker, and Tristan was feelin' it.  He was clapping and dancing.  The best part was being in the splash zone and getting splashed.

Valentine's Week

It seems that Valentine's Day has become more about the kids than Christian and me.  Oh well, it's fun and it's become one of Tristan's favorite holidays.  We were never really big on celebrating it anyways.

We finally hung these adorable pictures in the kid's room.  They were a gift from our friend, Alyse, who re-designed the image, printed and framed them from pallet wood.  The kid's names are printed on them too.  She's amazing!

The kids and I put together some valentines to pass out to friends and T's preschool class.  Tristan signed his name on each valentine, which was such a chore to do!  We had to break up the signing into three sessions.  Oh, the patience we have as parents.  I'm very proud of him though!  I didn't get a picture of his signature :(

Tristan had the idea of sewing his dad a valentine bean bag.  We made one a couple of months ago and he's been begging to make another one for dad.  He thought a valentine one would be perfect.  He also wanted to make a couple more for his friends too.

The outfit below was put together by Miss Betsy herself, 100%.  And a tantrum was involved, so I gave in.  We can let it slide now, but this may be a problem when she starts school.

Valentine's Day morning, the kids woke up to some goodies.

Tristan had preschool this morning, and carried his valentine cards in his (girly) heart bag I made him.

Betsy was devastated when we dropped Tristan off to school, as usual.  We both ran a quick errand, went home to finish her valentine cards, clean, snack and paint our nails.  She was so happy to put her cards in her heart bag and pass them out to Tristan's class when we picked him up.

Betsy loves to read.  She loves all Gyo Fujikawa books because of the cute baby illustrations.  She loves pointing to the children and mimicking their expressions, or tells me, "She's sad", or "He's sleeping".  Fujikawa books are my favorite too!

A couple of days before Valentine's Day, I cut my finger.  :(  We were walking out the door for church on Sunday and noticed one of the glass window panes was broken on our porch.  We just picked it up and put it in a box to take down to the trash.  It was pouring rain!  So Christian rushed down to the car with Betsy in his arms, and Tristan and I walked a little slower as I carried the box.  As we were headed down, I bent over to help Tristan with something, and the glass from the box started spilling out.  I went to catch it and it sliced my finger.  Genius!  I wasn't sure how bad the cut was at first because there was a ton of blood.  It was kind of puddling on the ground below me.  I knew I needed Christian to help me so I started yelling his name but he couldn't hear me because of the loud rain and I believe they were already in the car waiting.

Then my little hero jumped into action.  Without even telling him to go get dad, Tristan took off running, as fast as his little legs could carry him.  He yells, "I'll go get help!" as he gets soaked in the rain.  The car was out of my sight so I couldn't see what happened, but Christian told me later that he stood by the car in the pouring rain.  C opened the door and said jump in the car, but he wouldn't, he just stood there for a second, then said "Mom had an accident, you need to help her!  She got cut by the glass".  I think at this point, Christian thought the worst.  He imagined that I slipped in the rain and fell on the glass somehow.  Both my boys ran to my rescue.  Thank goodness it was minor!  But it was bleeding so much and it hurt, I knew that a band-aid wouldn't do the job.  So we went to the ER to see if I needed stitches.  I was naive and thought that we would be in and out quickly, and then could make if for some of church.  Ha ha.  3 hours later, my finger was glued back together and we were able to go home.  Tristan loves hearing this story being told about how he was a hero and saved his mom.  Later that night when we told him again how brave and what a hero is was, he said, "We're heroes everyday..."

I appreciate this finger and everything it does for me so much more now.
Get well soon, little guy!
Finger glued together.

Punahou Carnival

The 2-day Punahou carnival happens every year and this was the first year we've been.  We've always heard that the crowds were crazy and it was really really over priced.  True and true.  We actually went early Saturday morning, and the scrip lines (tickets) were super long already.  It was so much fun though!  I don't think we would ever brave going at night because I heard that you're shoulder to shoulder.  It wasn't too bad for us yet.  The kids had a blast and that's all that matters!

This is a picture of the carnival at night.  No thank you!
